How to Find a Niche for Your Business

Actually, you want to do more than just find a niche for your business. Niche marketing means you need a super niche that sets your business apart from everyone else’s business and gives you fun and profits for a long time.

First, let’s look at what a niche is. A niche is a part of the overall marketplace. It’s like going to the produce section of the grocery store when you want to buy tomatoes. For your internet business, you want to attract people who want what you are selling; you want them to come to your spot. That being said, how do you find an your own little part of the internet that helps you start a successful internet business?

To find your own spot for your internet business, or any business, your best bet is to look at what you are interested in and what you know about. After all, you will be spending a lot of time with your business. You might as well find a niche that keeps you happy – or at least one that holds your attention.

At the beginning of your niche search, take out a pencil and paper (or open a new computer document) and make a list of everything that you’ve done in your life; that could take a while. This could get a bit silly, but there could be a few real nuggets of gold in there. For example, if you happen to remember crapping in your pants as a kid, put it down. It could lead you to a niche that helps people potty train their kids.

Remember, you not only want to find a niche that you know or enjoy, but you also want to find your own spot that doesn’t have a lot of competition. Maybe those morning hangovers after late night drinking sessions taught you lessons that you want to pass on to younger generations. Or, maybe those hangovers caused you to learn about nutrition and that’s where you’d like to find a niche.

At this stage, don’t worry about making money on the niche. You are looking for as many ideas as you can find. Later, maybe after a day or two or six, you’ll have a ton of ideas to go through. That’s when you will begin to find a niche that makes sense.

Now that you have a ton (a hundred or more?) of ideas on your list, look at each one for a few seconds and decide whether you would like to discuss it with a friend or two over coffee or a few drinks. If you would, then you have something you like enough to work with. Now you can weed out the ones you don’t like all that much.

Look at the ones that are left. Maybe you want to talk about some flowers that you planted and nurtured. Maybe it’s about your favorite hobby. Try to come up with 10 or 20 or 30 ideas. Now you have enough ammunition to start to find a niche. From this group you can begin to evaluate whether any of these ideas have any profit potential.
